What to Wear Under Your Wedding Dress

Wedding Shoppe Wedding Dress

Wondering what you should wear under your wedding dress? The answer depends on a few factors: what you feel comfortable in and confident in, and what will fit under your dress. You may be best off in just a comfortable pair of underwear that don’t show panty lines - or you may decide on shape wear to feel more fitted under your dress. Either way, here are some ideas of what to wear under your dress to feel your best on your big day!

7 Important Tips for Bridal Undergarments

Okay let’s start with the basics. Picking out your undergarments can be as easy as wearing what you usually wear if your dress allows it. You have a ton of options if you want to get more serious than that but here’s a few of our favorite tips to get you started.

1) Wear something you’re already used to. If you usually wear a push-up or shapewear, search for something similar that’s compatible with your dress. If you don’t usually wear a bra, try to see if you can get away with doing that on your wedding day. If you usually need extra support, you will still need this under your wedding gown.

2) Check if your wedding dress has a built in bra! The easiest bra to wear is no bra. Many wedding dresses these days come ready to be worn without a bra or might even have padding built into them. These are great, especially for strapless or revealing dresses that aren’t easy to find a comfortable, invisible bra for.

3) Have your wedding alterations team add padding. If your wedding dress doesn’t have a built in bra, ask your alterations team if they can add some padding to the front of your dress! This is helpful especially if your wedding dress has a low back, plunging neckline, or cut outs.

4) Go with neutral colors. Underwear that matches your skin tone is ideal for invisibility. White, blush, or another neutral tone may work too. If your dress is white, there’s always a chance it could be see-through in some lights or with the camera flash, so it’s best to avoid any bright colors.

5) Double check that your dress isn’t see-through. I know we just mentioned this, but seriously: just make sure that your dress covers your undergarments even in bright light, full sun, and camera flash.

6) Bring your bridal undergarments to your fitting. The best way to see if your undergarments go with your dress is to take them with you to your fitting. Your alterations team may even be able to make adjustments to your dress to make it less revealing.

7) Avoid embellishments. Rhinestones, lace, and frills are all fun for lingerie but maybe not a great idea for under your wedding dress. If your dress is big enough to hide everything it may be fine, but in general, simple is better.

Base Your Bridal Undergarments on Your Wedding Dress Style

The first thing to consider when picking your undergarments is the type of wedding dress you’re wearing. Likely, the goal is for no one to see your undergarments. Watch out for obvious bra straps, panty lines, or bulky seams. Depending on the style of wedding dress you’ve chosen, you’ll want to choose undergarments that won’t be seen underneath and that you will feel confident and comfortable wearing all day.

Undergarments to Wear for Each Wedding Dress Type:

1) Strapless: Many strapless gowns these days come with padding in them in case you’d like to go braless. If you want to wear a bra, a supportive, non-slip strapless bra will keep you from yanking up your dress every ten minutes on the dance floor. An even better option would be a strapless corset bra.

2) Backless: A very adhesive sticky bra is a great idea for a backless dress. Don’t go for the cheapest option on this one; you want to make sure it will stick, even if you sweat. Alternatively: go braless. You could even see if your alternations crew can sew in bra padding if you feel too revealed.

3) Form-Fitting: If you like the way you look naturally in your form-fitted dress, you can find a nice seamless or no-show pair of panties, probably a thong to avoid a panty-line. If you feel a little uncomfortable with the look, you may want to consider shapewear to keep you feeling great, even after dinner and cake.

4) Deep-V: Search for a bra that has a cutout in the front, designed specifically for low necklines. Make sure that you are still supported on the sides to make up for the lack of center support.

5) Fit-and-Flare: This is another type of dress you may want to consider shapewear for. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in under this type of dress but watch out for panty lines since this is fitted around your waist and hips.

6) Ball Gown: For the most part you can wear whatever you’d like under a ball gown. You may not even need a bra. If your dress needs a bit of support, you may want to consider a hoop or slip.

Bridal Shapewear: Types of Shapewear to Consider

Shapewear is completely optional for your wedding but it might be worth considering. If you’re wearing a dress that is form fitting, doesn’t have much support, or is made from a revealing fabric, shapewear might help. You want to feel and look your best on your wedding day, so if shapewear will help you feel that way, you should try it!

Wedding shapewear can be especially helpful if you have a particular part of your body that you feel insecure about. Nowadays, shapewear comes in many different types, sizes, and styles.

1) Shapewear Shorts: Your hips, thighs, and butt may be some of your favorite features or they may make you feel a little insecure. If you would feel better with a bit of compression holding these areas in place, consider a pair of shapewear shorts. These are also great for avoiding pantylines without needing to wear a thong.

2) High Waisted Panties: Our tummies can be a point of insecurity for most of us at some point or another. A nice pair of high waisted tummy-control panties could help without needing a large piece of shapewear. You will be eating several courses of food, so you might want to invest in a pair of these just to feel confident even with a full belly.

3) Bodysuits: Need allover support? Bodysuits cover your bust, abdomen, hips, and thighs. They even come in low cut, low back, and strapless options to fit under all different types of dresses. You may want to consider this option if your wedding dress is especially tight or body-hugging.
